My name is Sean Patrick O’Rourke and I am a fully badged national tourist guide for all 32 counties north and south, trained and licensed by Failte Ireland which is the Irish Tourist Board. I am also a licensed driver of all vehicles from luxury saloon cars up to a 16 seater bus. Under current legislation in Ireland I am one of the few who are qualified to drive and guide in all these classes of vehicles.

For the majority of my own tours I use my own touring vehicle which is a modern, clean, air conditioned luxury touring Mercedes Viano (or for smaller numbers of 1 to 3 I drive a Mercedes E220 Saloon). It is capable of carrying up to 6 passengers. With sizeable luggage the ideal capacity is 4 passengers. (a larger vehicle can be brought in and the prices are different for that)

It should be noted that motoring in Ireland comparative to other countries is expensive (my touring vehicles cost 75,000 euro and 55,000 euro respectively). On the other hand a small private tour with a properly qualified driver guide in Ireland is quite a unique and valuable experience. Many of the places you will see and visit will be added to by the colourful narrative of the driver guide. I will be there beside you to answer a multitude of questions about Ireland and its fascinating culture and history.

  1. Driver Guide hours on the road are carefully monitored by our National Roads Authority for safety reasons. It is very important to note that the normal touring day quoted above includes my services as a driver guide for up to 8 hours including lunch break. I must stress that longer timeframes and ex and a full tra site visits may not be possible or cost more and would be decided on the day. Please note also that all prices above do not include any site entry fees or any food and refreshments.

These costs do NOT include hotels, air fares, lunches, dinners, any internal site entry fees (usually quite small). When a full itinerary is planned and dates are confirmed I will then add accommodations as required and a full cost package.

Please be aware that during all tours I apply strict government and EU rules about items that are not allowed in the touring vehicle. No meals of hot food or hot drinks (teas, coffees) are permitted. No alcohol, no potato chips of any sort or no chewing gums are permitted and each vehicle is a NON smoking one.

Tour Details

I will pick up your group of up to 6 people from a cruise ship at Dublin port or from a Dublin hotel and I will drive you north of the City to The Boyne Valley, an area of fertile land that has been farmed for more than 5500 years. The highlight of any visit to The Boyne Valley is a tour of Newgrange ancient passage tomb (in Gaelic Bru na Boinne or Palace of the Boyne). This massive World Heritage Site monument of 250,000 tons of granite boulders and earth was built by Neolithic people 1000 years before the pyramids of Egypt and more than 500 years before Stonehenge.

Very closeby is the site of the Battle of the Boyne, the largest battle ever fought on Irish or British soil. Often referred to as the Battle of the Kings, it determined the destination of the English crown, religious power in Europe and also religious domination in Ireland. The site is wonderfully illustrated and there are uniformed exhibits and information in a self guided tour around a Palladian mansion.

Another place to visit in the area of the Boyne valley is Monasterboice which hosts Ireland’s most decorated and celebrated high cross. This Celtic Cross is called the Cross of Muiredeach and also at this monastery is Ireland’s highest Celtic cross and the remains of a monastic round tower.

A short drive away is the Cistercian monastery of Mellifont from the 12th century.
